Science Learning Centre North East - Teacher Scientist Network

Teacher Scientist Network: Growing the Scientists of the Future

Science Learning Centre North East is working with employers and academics in our region to inspire and develop the skills of our young scientists of the future through ground-breaking partnership schemes linking schools and industry.

Teacher Scientist Network

The newly established Teachers Scientist Network puts the scientific community of our regional universities and industries into contact with science teachers, from all school phases, across the North East through a network of one-to-one teacher-scientist partnerships. The partnerships support and encourage teachers: helping them to deliver up to date and relevant science through exciting and innovative workshops or through the longer term ‘Scientist in Residence’ scheme.

Scientists in Residence

‘Scientists in Residence’ are managers, researchers, academics and technicians seconded from regional companies and higher education institutions to work with pupils on scientific projects linked to their industry. They provide teachers with expert knowledge and support and give pupils the opportunity to experience first hand the work of a ‘real’ scientist, increasing awareness of the attractiveness and diversity of career opportunities in science.

Teacher Placements

In addition to the ‘Scientist in Residence’ schemes, a ‘Science Industry Specialist’ programme is proposed where teachers who undertake a programme embracing both Science Learning Centre courses and an industry placement will be recognised as ‘Science industry Specialists’ There will be a reciprocal placement of a company scientist into school where the scientist will work alongside the ‘Science Industry Specialist’ on curriculum development and materials for classroom use.
